Transcript: Make 2016 your best year yet
Alycia Inglis
Hi. Welcome to this month’s blog. This year, we’re coming up to the end of the year, and at this time of the year, I like to take a little bit of time out and think about next year and what I’m trying to achieve, what goals I’m heading towards, and work out how I’m going to get there in different areas of my life. And Andrew Roberts is here joining me. Andrew is my personal business mentor and has helped me significantly with my own goal setting. And I’ve invited Andrew along to share some of your top tips for goal setting, for having your best year yet.
Andrew Roberts
Thank you, Alicia, and welcome everyone. And I love goal setting. I think it’s a great opportunity to just stop and slow down and actually ask that question, what is it that you want out of 2016 the year coming up? And for me, it’s it’s really important to schedule some time to not just think about it, but actually write down what it is that you want. Alicia. And there’s a little saying, and it’s known as the law of control, and the law of control states your level of happiness is in direct relation to how much control you have in all areas of your life. So if you look at all areas of your life, we’ve got your health, we’ve got your family, we’ve got your finances, we’ve got your social, we’ve got your relationship, your big dreams, as you refer to them. And if there’s if you’re out of control in one of those areas, it has a big impact on the other areas. And I think goal setting is a great opportunity for you to actually be a little bit selfish and stop and actually ask that question, you know, what is it that I would like, and not just thinking about it, writing it down on paper. Yes. So like, if we were to take money as an example in the past, before I learned about goal setting, my my thought process on New Years Day would have been I want to save some more money, or I want to spend less. And that’s vague, and you really do get what you think about. And so if you were to tighten ship and make that more specific, we’ve all heard of the SMART goals, the specific, measurable, achievable, realistic time down. If you were to actually, rather than just write down, I want to make more money, if you actually said, I want my net worth to grow from A to B. So let’s say it could be $200,000 net worth, and I want to get it to $350,000 ago. It may be a bit of a stretch, but once you write that down, Alicia, then bang, you could now got a goal absolutely and if we pass it back to you, because you work with a lot of people, and you obviously see some that are really successful with money, and others that others that aren’t. So once someone’s written that goal, I mean, what are some of the things that they could do to help them achieve that goal?
Alycia Inglis
Yeah, some of the key things that I see with people are very successful financially is really being specific, as you said, with their goals, So they know what they want to achieve, and then they work backwards from there to figure out how to achieve it. So they often have a lot of accuracy around their income and their cash flow and their expenses. So you know, they know exactly what’s coming in, what’s going out. They know how much they’ve got left over at the end of the month. So they can say right at the end of the year, or in 18 months time, I’ll have exactly this much available, which means I can purchase a property at this much, or I can invest in shares for this much, and this is how it’s going to impact my cash flow. So they do a bit of planning and budgeting going forward, and they really have control over their expenses, but not just that. They actually know what the outcome is going to be, so they know what they’re heading towards. So they’re very specific on their actual outcome, yeah,

And what happens over the space of the year? You have this little bit of a growth, and over 10 years, it’s an it’s an exponential growth, and this is where I believe anyone can achieve financial independence within a 10 year time frame, regardless of where they’re at. But it needs to start with the goal setting. And you know as well, from from us working together, Alicia, just taking that time out and creating a vacuum in the space, maybe giving yourself permission to have a really nice environment that enables you to put those goals down on paper. It changes everything absolutely.

So I think the key tip really is just taking some time out over the Christmas holidays, the new year, just by yourself. You know, to relax and have a think about where you’re headed. What are you trying to achieve? Where are you getting to, and then work backwards from there and and just put some some basically goals in writing. Is the key thing to get started. But if you do any want any help with your budgeting, we have a lot of budgeting tools available to assist you, as well as goal setting tools as well. So thank you very much, and we’ll see you next month. Bye.
